Habit and Habitat:
|
This trailing herb is found in sandy soil throughout India, and Sri Lanka. Gokhru
flowers are bright yellow in colour and fruits are green to yellow in colour.

Part Used:
|
Fresh fruit and shade dried fruit, are used in Ayurvedic system of medicine. Root
of Gokhru is also used for medicinal purposes in Ayurveda.
|

Effect on Dosha:
|
Pacifies Vata and Pitta.
|

General Properties in Ayurveda

|
|
|
Gokhru is indicated in Ayurveda for the treatment of urinary disorders, kidney diseases
and diseases of the genito-urinary system, calculus affections and impotence. In
Ayurvedic system of medicine Gokhru is indicated for use for regulation of heart
functions, reduction of inflammation, indigestion, chronic cough and asthma also.
In Ayurveda it is considered that Gokhru helps to improve vitality and vigor. Recent
researches have proved it to be effective as analgesic, aphrodisiac, diuretic, lithotripter,
nervine, rejuvenative, tonic.

External Usage: |
Externally powdered fruits are used in face packs for scrubbing action.
|
|
Internal Usage: |
Gokshur is used in wide range of ailments in Ayurveda.
|

Immune System:
|
It is a ‘Balya’ means muscle strengthening & ‘Rasayana’ herb & is used for rejuvenation
and revitalization of musculo-skeletal system.

Blood Circulatory System:
|
It is used in circulatory disorders for its depressant properties. It helps to control
cardiac inflammation by diuresis.
|
|
Digestive System: |
Decoction of Gokshur helps in congestion & in breathing difficulty. Widely used
in Ayurvedic formulations for asthma, chronic cough, allergic cough as it helps
as mucolytic agent.
|
|
Uro-genital System:
|
Gokhru has excellent diuretic properties. In females it is used in formulations
for uterine inflammation and menstrual disorders. Tribulus is widely used in Ayurvedic
formulations as a tonic for stimulating male genital system and in conditions such
as loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, oligospermia & impotence. In females with
history of threatened abortions it is widely used for its beneficial properties.

Nervous System: |
It has mild sedative & mild hypnotic properties. It is used in Vata disorders.

Gokshur is widely used in various formulations in Ayurvedic medicine. Some of the
classical formulations containing Gokshur are: Gokshuradi churan, Gokshuradyavleha,
Gokshuradi gugglu, Gokshuradi kwath, Dashmoolarishta.
